From Seed to Harvest: BAI Celebrates Its First Graduating Class

There was a special sense of history at Bobi Agribusiness Institute (BAI) in Omoro District as the institute celebrated its inaugural graduation ceremony, marking an important milestone in its mission to equip young people with practical skills, character and knowledge to transform agriculture and their communities.

The ceremony was honoured by Her Royal Highness Sylvia Nagginda Luswata, the Nnaabagereka of the Kingdom of Buganda, who served as the Guest of Honour. Known for her commitment to education, youth empowerment, vocational skilling and sustainable human development, the Nnaabagereka’s presence added significance to a day centred on equipping a new generation for meaningful contribution to society.

For BAI, this milestone represents much more than students receiving certificates. It is part of a bigger vision to raise Godly transformational leaders who can rebuild, restore and transform their communities.

Recognising Uganda’s enormous agricultural potential, Watoto officially opened BAI in Omoro in 2024 as an accredited agribusiness college. The institute was established to equip young people, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds, with practical agricultural and entrepreneurial skills while developing character, faith and leadership.

The programme brings together classroom learning, practical farm experience, Christian character formation, business and entrepreneurship training, and community service. Students live and study on campus, participate in the daily operation of the BAI farm and gain hands-on experience in areas including farm operations, animal husbandry, agricultural research and community outreach.

From a mother’s garden to a career

For graduate Jackson Tukahiirwa, his journey in agriculture began at home, watching his mother grow crops to feed the family and earn an income.

He loved agriculture but wanted to understand how farming could become more productive and profitable. At BAI, he gained practical knowledge in crop production, soil management, pest and disease control, irrigation, farm records and agribusiness.

Today, Jackson is a crop consultant and farm manager, using his skills to support and advise other farmers. What began in his mother’s garden has grown into a profession and a passion through which he hopes to make a difference in Uganda and beyond.

More than an education

For Ivan Nagwere, choosing BAI was a decision about his future.

He describes BAI as a place where classroom theory meets real-world experience, with instructors who bring industry knowledge into the classroom and facilities that support practical learning.

Ivan also highlights BAI’s partnerships with Dallas International University and College of the Ozarks, which have given students access to a globally recognised academic framework alongside valuable hands-on experience.

For him, BAI has provided more than an education — it has given him practical skills, a global perspective and the confidence to pursue a career in agribusiness.

The harvest has just begun

As the pioneer graduates step into their next chapter, they carry with them more than qualifications. They carry skills, experience, character and a vision to contribute to their communities and Uganda’s agricultural future.
