TOPIC: PUTTING ON THE RIGHT OUTFIT

ICE BREAKER: What would you prefer; your children to turn out like you or your spouse?

REFLECTION:
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was to ‘clothe all believers’ with power from on high (Luke 24:49). That power was to work in all the members of the household so that their lives would honour and glorify the Lord.
While every marriage begins with the power of excitement and hype, there comes a time and moments where personal power is insufficient to keep the marriage strong and healthy. The happiness at the beginning often wears off due to disharmony caused by ‘outfits’ of selfishness, anger, bitterness and unforgiveness. To live beyond this frustration, we need a different Spirit designed outfit.
Our text today describes that outfit that will enable us to have the kind of marriage we always longed for.

TEXT:  Colossians 3:12–14 (NIV)
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

DISCUSSION:

1. What aspects of the prescribed ‘outfit’ do you acknowledge as missing in your relationship as a couple?
2. How can we help one another as a couple to deal with those gaps and grow in our relationship?
3. Take time to pray for one another to experience the fullness of Holy Spirit power in marriage.
