Deogratious Alcope, Uganda’s Professional Golfer,Trains Watoto Children to play Golf

As one of Uganda’s leading professional golfers, Deogratious understands firsthand how opportunity can transform a life. His story mirrors the journeys of many children who simply need someone to believe in them. Through the Watoto Golf Tournament, a few Watoto children are being introduced to golf, opening doors to mentorship, discipline, and future opportunities.
“I may not have been a Watoto child, but my history and how I started playing golf are more or less the same because I did not come from a well-to-do family. Not a single member of my family played golf. As a little boy, I grew up in a barracks in Entebbe. We were fortunate to live near a golf course, so we started by picking golf balls.
Eventually, we found ourselves at the golf club, where people identified talent in us and supported us. We took that opportunity seriously, and today, I am privileged to be one of the most recognized names in Ugandan golf.
Therefore, giving Watoto children a chance to play golf is a very good thing. In my first lesson with the children, I shared my story and encouraged them to take it seriously because it can open doors for them.
Many countries in Africa are struggling with unemployment, but I can confidently say that I am a professional golfer. It’s not that I didn’t go to school – I studied Civil Engineering – but I eventually pursued golf. Golf has given me employment. I work for the club, and I earn a living through the sport.

That alone has changed the lives of people around me. I believe that if these children take the game seriously, they too can start winning tournaments and one day represent Uganda on the national team, creating impact in their communities.
It will inspire not only the children we have started with but also many others in the community. When children are given opportunities like this, they can become something great in the future. Golf is a wonderful sport for networking and socializing, and above all, it teaches discipline.
Sometimes you do not know what the future holds. I call upon companies and individuals to walk this journey with these children. Support the children and this initiative. One of these children can become something extraordinary, and the story will be: “MTN supported, Stanbic Bank supported, and you supported.”
Join us at the Watoto Golf Tournament on 8 August 2026 at Uganda Golf Club, Kampala. By participating, sponsoring, donating, or partnering with us, you will help vulnerable mothers provide for their children and create opportunities for them to thrive. Together, we can transform lives—one family, one child, and one opportunity at a time.
