Empowered to Rebuild: Act Justly

What do we do when injustice becomes so common that we stop noticing it?

In this message from our Empowered to Rebuild series, we turn to Nehemiah 5, where the greatest threat to rebuilding was no longer an enemy from outside. It was injustice within the community, as powerful people benefited at the expense of the weak and vulnerable.

Biblical justice means recognizing every person as valuable because they bear God’s image, treating people equally and fairly, and defending those who are vulnerable.

Through Nehemiah’s response, we discover three ways God empowers us to act justly:

1. Hear the cry – Refuse to become indifferent to another person’s suffering.
2. Confront injustice – Use your voice, influence and position to challenge what is wrong.
3. Restore what was broken – Move beyond regret and take practical steps to make things right.

This message also challenges us to examine how we use power in our families, workplaces, businesses, churches and communities. We cannot demand justice from those above us while practicing injustice towards those below us.

At the cross, God’s justice and mercy met perfectly. Through Jesus, God acted justly on our behalf, forgave our sin and now empowers us by His Spirit to rebuild what injustice has broken.

2. Whose pain or cry around you could you have become numb to, ignored or treated as “just the way things are?”
3. Where might you be using your position, power, resources or influence in a way that benefits you at the expense of someone more vulnerable?
4. Is there any injustice or wrong you have committed that requires more than an apology, what specific steps can you take to make things right?
